"We have used new wood–basswood, cypress. But, the quality of the product when it's reclaimed--especially when from your shop there--is always impeccably done. That has a big impact on people and on the ability to build something true." Read & view project photos at David Salmela Interview (pdf)

DTC: What drew you to reclaimed wood as a material for your design work?
CF: "Its beauty and tactile nature. Its character/embedded history–including the old points of attachment, stress, and bearing. Its final stability (predictability of retained character), higher density and structural capacity."
DTC: How do you 'sell' your clients on the value of reclaimed wood vs. its expense?
CF: "Look at it! It pretty much sells itself based on aesthetics alone."

"Using timbers from Duluth Timber is keeping in line with our goal of providing a green product for our clients. Also, materials are perfectly dry so we never have any issues with twisting or such with large timber work. Plus the whole crew down there is great to work with."

"The project uses (3) timbers. (2) 8X14 timbers are used as beams to support the cantilevered screen porch floor and ceiling and (1) 8X8 timber is used as a canted post to support the floor timber beam. The canted post adds a dramatic flair as you pass by it going up the entry stairs. The richness of the graining and the character of the timber's refurbished quality provides a great bridge between the woods outside and the refined cabin finish inside." "Brandin, I got so excited after receiving my beams last week I neglected to send the 'thank you' and 'I love them' note I'd promised. I loved that you gave me some nails, a great mix of wood, the 8X8s I was so crazy for, and a wonderful main beam, made all the more interesting with the paint on it which I lacked the foresight to request. It's almost like you really know what you're doing, no?! All kidding aside, I AM grateful. These beams are the centerpiece of the studio and far better than I'd imagined. Thank you."
